Celebrating Mary Ward at The Bar Convent
Mary Ward (1585–1645) is one of history’s most significant yet unknown figures. A proud Yorkshire woman and a pioneering advocate for women’s equality, she founded the Congregation of Jesus and inspired a global following that continues today.
Join us for Mary Ward Week (23–30 Jan) and our extended programme of activities as we celebrate her life, her courage, and her vision.

Special exhibition marking the momentous coming together of the two branches of Mary Ward’s global family: the Congregation of Jesus and the IBVM (Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary). Included in admission to the exhibition
23 January – 14 March: In the Footsteps of Mary Ward
A Family-Friendly trail through the exhibition. Included in admission.
25 January: Mary Ward Ecumenical Service
An annual service available to live stream from St Thomas’ Church website.
Saturday 31 January: York Residents Festival
Throughout the day: 50p exhibition entry
11am: Join us for a fascinating Q&A with Sydney Thorne, author of the biography Mary Ward: The First Sister of Feminism. Sydney will be joined in conversation by Hannah Wilkinson, co-host of the podcast Two Girls One Book, for a compelling discussion delving into this Yorkshire woman’s extraordinary life. No booking required. Free.
5th March: Lunchtime Talk with Dr Hannah Thomas: Who is Mary Ward?
1pm- 1:30pm: Explore the history of one of Yorkshire’s most significant global icons. As part of York International Women’s Week, a week long programme of events, see www.yorkwomen.org.uk . No booking required, free. Discounted entry to the exhibition for attendees of the talk.
